YouTube launches feature letting creators test multiple thumbnails

Delhi: YouTube has introduced a new feature allowing creators to experiment with multiple video thumbnails. Initially revealed last June, the tool, dubbed "Thumbnail Test and Compare," was initially limited to a select few creators. Now, all creators can test up to three thumbnails for a video.

Using this feature, YouTube evenly displays the chosen thumbnails to viewers and selects a winner based on watch time share, employing the concept of A/B testing. Although results may take several days to two weeks to finalize, creators receive detailed data on thumbnail performance. The winning thumbnail earns a "Winner" label, while others may be labeled "Preferred."

Creators retain the option to manually select thumbnails despite the tool's recommendation. YouTube plans to make this tool available to all eligible creators in the coming weeks, accessible through YouTube Studio on a computer with advanced feature access.

While thumbnail testing was previously limited, its impact is notable. Influencers like MrBeast have reported increased watch time by testing thumbnails featuring closed-mouth expressions. Consequently, many of his recent thumbnails depict him with a closed mouth.

In addition to thumbnail testing, YouTube announced other updates. AI-powered video skipping, tested last month, is now available on Android for YouTube Premium subscribers. The platform is also experimenting with QR codes for creators and enabling channel mentions in comments using the @ symbol.
